The day is dedicated to worship the sixth form of Maa Durga, Goddess Katyayani.

Goddess Katyayani is one of Maa Durga’s most ferocious forms. She was created to eradicate demons from the planet. She has four hands, one of her hands hold a long sword, another two hands hold lotus flower, and the fourth is in the Abhay Mudra, which she uses to bless her followers. She fought with the devils and exudes strength and vitality. Jupitar planet, also known as brihaspati or the guru of all the deities is ruled by Maa Katyayani. Goddess Katyayani is known as Mahishasurmardini because she killed the demon Mahishasur by beheading him with a sword.

According to the Hindu scriptures, a sage named Katyayan had no children and was a devoted follower of Maa Parvati. Goddess Parvati was sternly penanced by Sage Katyayan, who prayed to her to take birth as his daughter. Goddess Parvati got pleased by seeing his devotion and granted him the desired wish fulfillment. Goddess Parvati took the form of Katayayani, his daughter.

Chaitra Navratri 2026 Day 6: Puja Vidhi
1. Take a holy bath as soon as you wake up.You can light a diya in front of the idol of Maa Durga, offer fresh flowers, garlands, and fruits, apply kumkum to the forehead, and present homemade sweets.4. Offer the Goddess with at least five shringaar articles (bindi, saree, bangles, mehendi, sindoor, and haldi).5. Light a camphor and cloves and present it to the goddess.6. Perform Maa Katyayani Aarti and Goddess Durga.7. Ask the divine mother for forgiveness and blessings.8. After presenting bhog prasad to the Goddess, devotees may break their fast.
