If the mass student protests of Sept 8 and 9 last year rattled Nepal’s political establishment, the election verdict has shaken it even more profoundly.

What began as youthful anger on the streets has now translated into a sweeping electoral message: Nepalis are weary of instability, exhausted by hung parliaments, and impatient with the endless wrangling of an ageing political class. The ballot box has spoken with unusual clarity, signalling a generational shift in Nepal’s politics.
