Curtains, humble and hardworking as they are, dress up our windows and screen out the harsh rays of the sun. Due to their vertical structure and lack of manipulation, curtains accumulate a great deal of dust, pollen, animal dander, and the microscopic particles of exhaust from cars and trucks passing by outside. In the past, the recommended solution was to spend an entire day removing, cleaning, and then trying to dry and iron the heavy material into shape. However, recent findings from the field of textiles suggest that perhaps we clean them too much and do not move them enough.However, aside from the energy involved, another problem is the damage caused to fabrics by regular washing since water and heat cause shrinking, bleaching, and that new, curtain-like softness fades away. Even more important than this, however, is the high price of heating large quantities of water for rinsing off surface dirt. Hence, it becomes necessary to find an alternative method of cleaning through the use of mechanics.The physics of an optimal shakeAll movements do not provide an equal effect on the cleanliness of fabrics. For decades, shaking left and right was the traditional way to clean textiles of their dust. Although this could easily make the surface clean, it failed to remove any dust trapped inside the weave. In a study published by Fashion and Textiles, it became clear what kind of movement is most effective.Whereas the typical shake is characterised by an oscillating movement, the twist involves rotation whereby the material is swung through a semi-circular path around a central pivot point. This results in a unique behaviour in which the entire fabric from the top to the bottom vibrates intensely. From the experiments conducted, it can be seen that the twist causes vertical and rotational motions, thereby flicking dust particles from the fabric.However, the research revealed that fabrics respond to this movement differently. Due to the high flexibility of silk, this material moves the most. Cotton fabric demonstrates a unique pattern called “fluttering,” which occurs only in the bottom hem and is effective in dust removal. For most people who have cotton or cotton blend curtains, it is worth mentioning that the best cleaning option is to twist them forcefully rather than to wave horizontally.High velocity for a clean homeWhy does a slight air stream through an open window not affect the dust in the curtains? Scientists investigated this issue during one more experiment in the Fashion and Textiles journal. It was revealed that velocity plays an important role in this case. When moving slowly, the fabric is not shaken forcefully enough to reach the lower layers. However, fast movements lead to sudden jolts that can remove dust even from very thick materials.
Scientists discovered that a forceful twisting motion, rather than horizontal shaking, is most effective for dislodging dust from fabrics. High-velocity movements, even for short durations, prove more efficient than slow ones for deep cleaning.
This scientific insight has paved the way for modern clothing care systems and even high-tech “air curtains.” In fact, a study featured in the journal Building and Environment explored how garment-hood-embedded air curtains can protect against fine dust. These technologies use high-speed air to create a protective barrier. While these are designed for personal protection, the principle is the same for the home: high-speed, targeted movement is the best defence against microscopic pollutants.Fortunately, there is no need to purchase expensive equipment to reap the benefits. Scientists have proven that the maximum effect in the form of the removal of accumulated dust is achieved after the first ten minutes of movement. Therefore, a short intensive cleaning process using a portable vacuum cleaner or shaking can be not only more efficient in terms of effectiveness, but also financially feasible.Choice of materials to keep your house clean and healthyIt is important to note that maintaining the cleanliness of the curtains depends not only on their cleaning but also on the choice of materials. For example, curtains made of linen may seem luxurious, but they will be less easy to clean due to the lack of freedom of vibration. Cotton continues to be the most popular material due to its excellent ratio of weight and flexibility.Moving away from the ‘wash only’ mentality and embracing the power of science to remove dust using mechanical methods will ensure that our homes remain healthier while at the same time keeping the curtains clean for much longer. The approach involves working with the nature of the cloth and not against it, and a little time spent moving around in the proper way will help to achieve these goals.
