The search along a crocodile-infested river in South Africa was never meant to end like this. Businessman’s disappearance ends with remains found inside crocodile
As reported by the BBC, the incident began after heavy flooding hit parts of Mpumalanga province. The businessman reportedly tried to cross a low bridge when his vehicle got trapped in fast-moving water. By the time authorities arrived, the car was empty. No sign of him nearby. From there, things escalated quickly. Search teams suspected he had been swept downstream. The Komati River, already known for wildlife hazards, became the centre of a growing and tense recovery effort.Drones were deployed. Helicopters circled overhead. Officers scanned the riverbanks for anything unusual. It seems almost routine at first glance, but a small island in the river caught attention during aerial scans. Several crocodiles were seen basking in the sun. Officers reportedly noticed one animal behaving differently. It barely moved, even with the noise of drones and helicopters overhead. Experienced officers suspected something. Possibly recent feeding. It is not uncommon for crocodiles in the region to become unusually still after a large meal, experts suggest. That observation changed the direction of the operation entirely.The reptile in question, a massive 4.5-metre crocodile weighing around 500kg, was later killed. It was then transported to Kruger National Park for inspection. What followed was grim confirmation. Human remains were found inside its intestines. Some personal items were also discovered, including multiple shoes. Police noted there were six different types, though they stressed it does not automatically mean multiple victims. Crocodiles, as one officer put it, “will eat or swallow anything.”According to the X(Formerly Twitter) post, the remains were believed to be those of 59-year-old Gabriel Batista, who had previously been swept away in raging floodwaters.
Police carry out risky recovery operation amid unstable river conditions
The most striking part of the entire story was still to come. Captain Johan Potgieter, commander of a police diving unit, was lowered by helicopter into the river area to assist in the recovery. The operation has been described as “highly dangerous and complex” by police officials. He reportedly secured the animal before both the officer and the remains were lifted out of the river zone. “The sharp end of a crocodile is not the best place to approach it,” he later told News24. A simple sentence. But it carries weight. Even with the crocodile already dead, the risk remained. The environment itself was unstable. Water currents, wildlife, unpredictable terrain and everything was stacked against them.
Officials await DNA results as investigation into river incident continues
DNA testing is now underway to confirm the identity of the remains. Authorities have not yet made a final official confirmation. Families wait. Investigators continue piecing together the final moments of the incident. There is also the uneasy question of whether the crocodile may have had previous victims. Officers have not confirmed anything beyond speculation.
