I flee a lavish reception, clutching my treasures, my wedding dress disheveled, a shadow of desperation.

MIRA BHAYANDER: Kashimira police in Mira Road arrested a man and a woman on Monday for allegedly running a racket that involved marrying men and fleeing with their cash and jewellery days after the ceremony. The duo was wanted in five cases in Maharashtra and the police said they are investigating to find out if more victims had been similarly duped by them. The two were remanded in police custody after being booked under BNS sections for cheating and theft. The accused have been identified as Virar resident Neha Khandelwal aka Jannat (22) and Nashik’s Kesrimal Ranka (45). A police official said, “Kesrimal used to play the role of the father or uncle to approach the targets (potential grooms) and send them photos of accused number one, Neha, as a prospective bride. The wedding would take place and two to three days after the ceremony, Neha would flee with gold, cash and valuables.” The police said the two accused met in Virar a few years ago and ever since have been involved in this scam. They would target divorced men in the 40-plus age bracket.
