'Running on a platform of shutting down temples': Hindu leader says Republican loss in Texas local election not surprising

Democrat Taylor Rehmet defeated Republican Leigh Wambsganss for the open Texas Senate District 9 seat in Tarrant County which is the largest Republican county in the nation. It was a special election to fill the seat after the incumbent Republican resigned to take another office and Rehmet will serve the remainder of the current term through early 2027. Though it was a small election in size, the outcome shook up the Republican bigwigs as it is a deep-red district that flipped towards blue. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said this should not be taken lightly by the Republicans ahead of the midterms as the swing can’t be dismissed. Hindu American Foundation chairman Suhag A Shukla pointed out that the overall ICE threat in the country, the hatred against the Indian community specifically in Texas, are not winning strategies either. “Special elections are quirky and not necessarily projectable re: a general election. That said, a swing of this magnitude is not something that can be dismissed. Republicans should be clear-eyed about the political environment heading into the midterms,” DeSantis posted his takeaways from the Texas election. “Just spitballing here…but maybe ICE agents shooting folks in the streets, a racially coded white panic over Indian American immigrants and running on a platform of shutting down Hindu temples (like a failed TX Senate candidate) are not winning strategies,” Shukla wrote. India and Hindu-hatred have been brewing in Texas as several local leaders questioned the existence of the Hindu temples in the state and called them ‘evil’. Recently, Texas announced a freeze of H-1B hiring in state agencies and universities and also an investigation into three private businesses that hired H-1Bs. On her defeat, Leigh Wambsganss, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump, said it is a wake-up call for Republicans in Tarrant County and also the nation. “The Democrats were energized. Too many Republicans stayed home.” “The dynamics of a Special Election are fundamentally different from a November General Election. I believe the voters of Senate District 9 and Tarrant County Republicans will answer the call in November,” she wrote.
