The iconic Land Rover Defender could soon take on a new role in India, this time in military uniform. Tata Advanced Systems Limited, the defence arm of the Tata Group, is reportedly showcasing the rugged SUV as a potential Special Utility Military Vehicle for the Indian Army. The proposal is likely at an evaluation and promotional stage, and the Defender’s induction into military service is far from confirmed. The move comes at a time when the Indian Army is looking to modernise its fleet with newer and more capable platforms. Globally, the Defender already has a long association with defence and expedition use. Now, Tata Group, which owns the Jaguar Land Rover brand, appears keen to bring that legacy into Indian defence operations as well. The SUV is currently sold in India in three body styles, Defender 90, Defender 110 and Defender 130. Depending on the variant, seating capacity ranges from five to eight occupants, making it suitable for troop movement, patrol and transport duties. The platform’s flexible layout also allows it to be adapted for specialised applications including reconnaissance, liaison roles, logistics support and communication duties.

One of the biggest strengths of the Defender is its modular construction. The vehicle can potentially be equipped with specialised communication systems, light weapon mounts or additional protective equipment depending on mission requirements. This flexibility allows it to be configured in multiple ways. The SUV’s off-road credentials are another major highlight. The Defender comes equipped with an all-wheel-drive system, Terrain Response modes and advanced suspension technology designed to tackle difficult surfaces. These capabilities could make it suitable for varied operating conditions including deserts, mountainous regions and rough border terrain where the Indian Army often operates.Under the hood, the Defender range offers multiple engine choices. These include a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, a 3.0-litre diesel engine, a 5.0-litre V8 petrol unit and the range-topping 4.4-litre TwinPower Turbo V8 seen on the high-performance OCTA version. While the military-spec version could receive different tuning or modifications, no official technical details have been revealed yet.
