Delhi heatwave: Simple ways riders can use to prevent heatstroke

With temperatures in New Delhi already touching over 42°C and forecasts suggesting highs of 43–45°C, the India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heatwave conditions in the capital. Authorities have warned of rising heat stress and advised people to avoid exposure during peak hours and stay hydrated. For motorcycle and scooter riders, this kind of heat is not just uncomfortable, it can be risky. Unlike car users, riders are directly exposed to hot winds, engine heat and long hours under the sun. This increases the chances of dehydration and heatstroke, especially in stop-go traffic where airflow is limited. One simple thing riders can do is manage timing. You can avoid riding during peak afternoon hours, usually between 12 pm and 4 pm. Early morning or late evening rides are far easier on the body. Even a slight change in timing can make a big difference.

Hydration is equally important. You should keep water handy and take short breaks during longer rides. Experts often recommend sipping water regularly instead of waiting to feel thirsty. Light fluids like ORS or coconut water can also help maintain energy levels. What you wear also matters. Many riders think heavier gear protects better, but in extreme heat, breathable riding jackets with ventilation panels are more practical. You can also use a light-coloured helmet and a neck scarf to reduce direct heat exposure. Another thing riders often ignore is early warning signs. Dizziness, excessive sweating, headache, or sudden fatigue are clear indicators. If you feel any of these, you should stop riding immediately and rest in a shaded or cool place. In such conditions, riding smart is more important than riding fast. A few small precautions can help you stay safe and keep your daily commute manageable even in Delhi’s extreme summer.
