Car maintenance tips that can improve fuel efficiency: Easy steps

The ongoing conflict in West Asia has started affecting global oil supply and fuel prices. In India too, there is a growing focus on saving fuel and reducing unnecessary usage. While many people focus only on driving style to improve mileage, car maintenance also plays a huge role. A neglected car usually consumes more fuel. On the other hand, a well-maintained vehicle runs smoother, feels lighter to drive and can save fuel in the long run too. The best part is that these are not expensive fixes. A few basic checks and habits can actually make a noticeable difference.

Keep tyre pressure in check

Low tyre pressure is one of the biggest reasons behind poor mileage. Underinflated tyres create more resistance on the road, forcing the engine to work harder. Check tyre pressure every few weeks, especially before long drives.

Do not delay servicing

Skipping service intervals may save money for a while, but it can hurt fuel efficiency later. Clean oil, healthy filters and properly working parts help the engine perform better.

Clean or replace the air filter

Dusty air filters restrict airflow to the engine. This affects combustion and can increase fuel consumption. In dusty Indian conditions, checking the air filter regularly becomes even more important.

Avoid unnecessary weight

Many people keep tools, bags or random items in the boot for months. Extra weight puts more load on the engine. Removing unwanted luggage can slightly improve efficiency, especially in city traffic.

Wheel alignment matters

If the steering feels slightly tilted or the car pulls to one side, the alignment may be off. Poor alignment increases drag and can reduce mileage over time.

Don’t ignore warning lights

A small issue in the engine or sensors can quietly affect fuel efficiency. If a warning light appears on the dashboard, it is better to get the car checked.
