A black hole was discovered recently by some scientists who were amazed when they observed the hole wake up from its dormant state after sleeping for roughly 100 million years. The consequence was a burst of energy comparable to a volcanic eruption in outer space. Although it may appear far-fetched, it gives significant information concerning the nature of black holes. Let us examine this subject further.
What does it mean for a Black Hole to “wake up”
Black holes do not eat constantly because sometimes they may lie inactive for extended durations without anything to consume. However, once gas, dust particles, and even stars enter their range, they resume feeding. This particular instance happened recently around a supermassive black hole located at the core of some distant galaxy. According to the scientists involved in this study, ‘The Clusters Hiding in Plain Sight (CHiPS) Survey: CHIPS1911+4455, a Rapidly Cooling Core in a Merging Cluster,’ supermassive black holes are known to switch from inactive to active stages and the other way around.Once a supermassive black hole starts its eating process, it emits highly intense bursts of energy and light. Researchers said that “black holes are capable of spending long periods in dormancy and then suddenly turning active due to the availability of new fuel.”
A cosmic volcano : What actually happened
This volcano analogy has something to do with the way the energy gets discharged into the surroundings. Unlike lava that flows out of a volcano during an eruption, a black hole ejects high-energy jets as well as radiation.In this particular case, scientists discovered massive energy discharges, which most probably occurred after millions of years of build-up.
