Amidst what was described as exit interviews, Auston Matthews and William Nylander reportedly discussed key issues regarding the roster with the Toronto Maple Leafs, potentially entering what could easily be considered one of the most impactful NHL offseasons the team has ever experienced. Darren Dreger, an insider, reported that both stars requested that the management make the team tougher and more mobile on the offensive side, as the team had yet another dismal season.Such discussions that have been reported have also enhanced NHL trade rumors regarding the franchise. The leadership team in Toronto seems less interested in including more offensively oriented and playmaking forwards and defensemen with their pucks since the management contemplates redefining their roster around Matthews and Nylander and entering the next season.

Auston Matthews and William Nylander highlight the Toronto Maple Leafs NHL team priorities

Auston Matthews and William Nylander allegedly said to the Toronto Maple Leafs that they require tougher forwards and movable defensemen. The remarks are allegedly made in team-exit meetings following the challenging season enjoyed by Toronto. According to Darren Dreger, both players do not lose hope in the core of the roster; however, they believe that the team is physically outmuscled and that they do not have an assuring blue line that moves the pucks. These concerns are representative of some of the problems that Toronto has had to deal with over the season, particularly the major games that had the shape of playoffs. The fact that Matthews and Nylander determined the same weaknesses is noteworthy since it provides the management with the first-hand evaluation internally held by two franchise stars. The demand for “dogs up front” (possibly) indicates that Toronto can get more powerful power forwards or veterans of two-ways out of the NHL offseason. In the meantime, the post requesting two mobile defensemen suggests that the organization might become a party to NHL trade rumors and free agency in the next several months. The front office of Toronto is now under pressure. Some speculation about the long-term prospects of Auston Matthews is also quieted in the report.
