It is normal to see a small spark when you are plugging an appliance or a charger into an electrical outlet. The small spark of electricity is often unexpected, but it is not always a cause for concern.What is happening is that a small amount of electricity is leaping from the plug to the outlet as it is being plugged in. In most cases, the small spark is not a cause for concern and is simply a result of the electrical current being plugged in as the wires are being placed. But not all sparks are created equal. In some cases, a spark can be a sign of a serious electrical issue that could potentially cause damage or even pose a fire hazard if it is not addressed.
What causes dangerous sparking
The following are the most common underlying causes that can turn harmless sparks into serious ones:
- Loose wiring: If the wiring at the back of the outlet is loose, it may cause the current to jump randomly, which will result in sparks.
- Old or worn-out outlets: As time goes by, the contacts of the outlet may wear out, again, resulting in resistance and sparks.
- Overloaded circuit: When too many high-power appliances are connected to the same circuit, it may cause strain on the wiring and outlets.
- Poor installation: Poorly wired outlets or low-quality materials may cause dangerous electrical arcing.
When sparking is a real problem
The issue of sparking becomes a concern when it happens continuously or keeps happening even after the plug is fully inserted. Warning signs of a sparking issue may include loud crackling or buzzing sounds, burning smells, scorch marks around the outlet, or an outlet that is hot to the touch. These warning signs may indicate loose wiring, an overloaded circuit or other major problems with the circuit.
When a spark is not a big deal
A small and fast spark that appears when you connect a device to an outlet is usually normal and does not indicate any problem. This usually occurs at the same time when the metal prongs of the plug come into contact with the internal wiring of the outlet, enabling the flow of electricity. If the spark is small and does not recur, accompanied by unusual sounds, heat, or odour, it is usually not harmful. Devices that require an instant supply of electricity, such as hair dryers and microwaves, may cause this small spark to appear more frequently, but this does not indicate any problem with your electrical system.
What you should do if you notice problematic sparking
If the outlet is sparking unusually or alarmingly, it is always best to act quickly. Unplug any devices that are connected to the outlet and do not use the outlet. It is also not advisable to test the outlet repeatedly, as this may worsen the situation. In case the outlet appears to be hot or gives off a burning smell, it is best to contact a licensed electrician.
Tips to prevent outlet problems
To begin with, preventing sparking at the outlet requires you to use your electrical system wisely and maintain it properly.
- Do not overload an outlet with too many high-power appliances.
- Use high-quality surge protectors for your electronics
- If you notice that some of your outlets are loose, worn out, or do not retain the plug tightly, replace them.
