Why car tyres burst in summer and how to prevent it: Easy tips

Every summer, tyre problems become more common on Indian roads. Many drivers experience sudden punctures or even tyre bursts, especially during long highway trips. In most cases, extreme heat and poor tyre care are the main reasons. A tyre burst at speed can be frightening. Sometimes dangerous. But it is often avoidable. In several parts of India, temperatures easily cross 40 degrees Celsius. The road surface gets even hotter. When a car runs continuously in these conditions, heat builds up inside the tyres. Air pressure rises. The rubber also becomes softer and weaker. If the tyre is already worn or damaged, the risk of failure increases sharply.-One of the biggest reasons behind tyre bursts is wrong air pressure. Many drivers unknowingly run tyres with either too much or too little air. Both can be risky in summer.-Overinflated tyres are particularly vulnerable. As temperatures rise, the air inside expands. Pressure increases further. This extra stress can sometimes lead to a sudden burst. Underinflated tyres are not safe either. They flex more while rotating and generate extra heat. Over time, this weakens the tyre structure.

-The safest approach is simple. Stick to the pressure recommended by the manufacturer. A quick check every couple of weeks helps, especially before long drives.-Old tyres are another common problem. A tyre may still look usable from outside, but rubber deteriorates with time. In India, it is not unusual to see cars running on tyres that are five or six years old. Such tyres are more likely to fail in hot weather. Small cracks on the sidewall, bulges or uneven wear should never be ignored. These are early warning signs.-Overloading also puts tyres under stress. This often happens during family trips when the boot is full and the cabin is packed. Extra weight means extra heat. The tyres have to work harder. Keeping the load within limits makes a difference.-Speed plays a role too. Higher speeds mean more rotation and more heat. Long highway runs in the afternoon sun are particularly tough on tyres. Taking short breaks helps. It gives tyres time to cool down.-Regular inspection is important but often overlooked. A small nail or a minor cut may not seem serious at first. But it can weaken the tyre. In hot weather, such weak spots can fail without warning.-Wheel alignment and balancing matter as well. Many drivers ignore this. Poor alignment causes uneven wear, and worn-out patches heat up faster. Regular servicing keeps tyres in better shape.
