Who was 'Mem'? Mossad operative behind ‘Op Roaring Lion’ against Iran killed outside Israel

Israel’s intelligence unit Mossad has revealed that a senior operative who played a key role in laying the groundwork for Operation Roaring King on Iran was killed during the mission outside Israel. While addressing a remembrance day ceremony for the fallen intelligence officers, Mossad chief David Barnea identified the operative by the first Hebrew letter of his name, “Mem,” and said that he made a major contribution by leading complex missions that used creativity, deception and advanced technology.“On this day,” Barnea said during a Memorial Day ceremony at Mossad headquarters, “I think about the fallen Mossad members and their choice to contribute over the years to Israel’s security.”The disclosure is rare as Mossad rarely confirms losses of its intelligence agents.During his address, Barnea said his “thoughts and heart were filled with pride” while remembering the operative, who died while carrying out duties outside Israel.“During Operation Roaring Lion, my thoughts and heart were filled with pride in the person and work of ‘Mem,’ who fell outside of Israel while fulfilling his duties,” Barnea said, referring to the recent war with Iran.“The operation led by ‘Mem’ combined creativity, cunning, and advanced technology and significantly influenced the success of the campaign against Iran,” Barnea added. The operative’s full identity and the exact mission during which he died was not disclosed due to the intelligence protocol.According to a Times of Israel report, “Mem” was among four people who drowned when a boat capsized in Italy’s Lake Maggiore. At the time, he was named by Italian media as 50-year-old Erez Shimoni, which is believed to be an alias. His real identity was not officially publicized, but is publicly available on official Israeli memorial sites.Mem’s body was transported back to Israel for burial at Ashkelon’s military cemetery.Operation Roaring LionOperation Roaring Lion is the codename used by Israel for its ongoing military campaign against Iran, which targets strategic and nuclear-related infrastructure. The operation is being conducted in close coordination with the United States, which is carrying out the same mission under a separate codename. Together, the two allies are pursuing a joint campaign focused on degrading Iran’s nuclear and military capabilities. The operation began amid rising tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme and broader regional security concerns.
