US President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order that could mean new tariffs on goods from any country that sells or provides oil to Cuba. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said this week that her government has at least temporarily stopped sending oil shipments to Cuba. She said the decision was based on Mexico’s own choice and described it as a “sovereign decision,” not something done because of pressure from the United States. Trump has been pressuring Mexico to step back from the Cuban government and further isolate the island, which is already under tight US economic sanctions. Following the US military operation to remove former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Trump has said that Cuba’s government is on the verge of collapse.
