The parents of the boy alleged that the classmates had abused him by calling his caste name. They said the boys had lifted their son by holding his hands and legs and thrown him into a burning pit. They demanded legal action. However, the Kunnathur police stated that at no point the boy had been abused by using caste-related words nor had there been any intention to cause him harm. “The incident occurred purely due to a playful behaviour, without any malicious or discriminatory motive,” the police stated in a press release. The release stated: “The students involved are classmates and frequently visit one another’s houses. After school hours, the children routinely engage in cleaning activities on the school campus by collecting garbage and disposing of it into a designated garbage pit. Accordingly, on Friday, while disposing of garbage, it was noticed that fire was already burning in the pit. The children were playfully pushing one another. During this, two students held the boy by his hands and legs and swung him. They accidentally lost balance, and the boy fell into the burning garbage pit. The fellow students immediately rescued the injured boy, poured water over the affected areas and apologised to him. The matter was brought to the notice of the teachers, and the injured child was taken to hospital for medical treatment.”
