Tata Motors posts best-ever monthly sales in Jan '26: Is it Sierra effect?

Tata Motors has kicked off 2026 on a record-breaking note, posting its highest-ever monthly sales in January. The company sold a total of 71,066 passenger vehicles during the month, marking a sharp 47.1 per cent year-on-year growth compared to the 48,316 units sold in January 2025. This performance makes January 2026 Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles’ best month so far.

While Tata Motors has not yet shared individual sales figures for the newly launched Sierra, the response to the model has been hard to miss. The Sierra has seen exceptional customer interest, with bookings crossing the 70,000 mark within just 24 hours of the booking window opening. Tata Motors has already confirmed that production of the Sierra is being ramped up gradually to meet this overwhelming demand, though its contribution to January sales is not yet disclosed.

However, the company’s biggest volume driver for the month remained the Nexon. The SUV emerged as the company’s best-selling model in January 2026, with sales of 23,365 units. It was not only Tata’s top seller but also the highest-selling model across segments for the month. Adding to the milestone, cumulative Nexon sales have now crossed the 10 lakh mark.The Tata Punch also delivered a standout performance, finishing third on the sales podium with 19,257 units sold in January. The micro-SUV recorded its best-ever monthly sales during the period. Its cumulative sales have now gone past 7 lakh. The Tiago, meanwhile, joined the same club, with its cumulative sales also crossing 7 lakh units.Breaking down the overall numbers, Tata Motors sold 70,222 units in the domestic market, including electric vehicles, while exports contributed 844 units. The company’s EV portfolio continued to gain traction, with combined domestic and export EV sales standing at 9,052 units, up 72.7 per cent year-on-year.
