Sriram Raghavan reveals how a 'short film' became the Ayushmann Khurrana starrer ‘Andhadhun’: ‘I loved it so much'
Filmmaker Sriram Raghavan shared the genesis of his critically acclaimed film ‘Andhadhun’. He revealed that a short film by Hemant Rao sparked his interest, leading to its adaptation into a feature. Despite a smooth production, the team explored numerous plot twists and endings for the gripping narrative about a piano player entangled in a murder mystery.

Filmmaker Sriram Raghavan is well known in the entertainment industry for his work on films like ‘Badlapur’, ‘Johnny Gaddar’, ‘Ek Hasina Thi’, and ‘Merry Christmas.’ Another one of his best feature films includes ‘Andhadhun’, which stars Ayushmann Khurrana in the lead role. In a recent interview, the famed director opened up about how the film came to be and how excited he was to work on it.

Sriram Raghavan reveals how he came across ‘Andhadhun’

Talking to IANS about this, the filmmaker revealed that he had first received a short film from fellow filmmaker Hemand Rao. Although the story was not meant for the feature film medium, it excited him so much that he had to call Rao as soon as he finished it and ask him if they could work on it.He further shared, “At around 10.30 at night, I was checking my inbox and Hemant Rao had sent me a short film. I loved it so much I called him immediately. I said, “‘Why don’t we adapt this as a feature?’” He further provided details about how the filmmaking process was quite smooth-sailing, though they had a lot of endings and twists and turns invented for the film that they had to explore.

Premise of ‘Andhadhun’

The film is based on a piano player who pretends to be blind by wearing contact lenses and black glasses. After he becomes indirectly involved in the murder of a retired actor, and with corrupt police officers on his tail, he has to navigate how to save himself from the situation. Sriram Raghavan, along with Hemanth Rao, Pooja Ladha Surti, Arijit Biswas, and Yogesh Chandekar, co-wrote the script for ‘Andhadhun.’Other than Khurrana, the film also stars other big names in the lead roles, including Tabu, Radhika Apte, and Anil Dhawan. On the work front, Raghavan last worked on directing the film ‘Ikkis’, which is based on the life of Param Vir Chakra awardee Arun Khetarpal.
