Stabbed, two cops get back on feet to nab criminal

NEW DELHI: Despite being stabbed while chasing a history-sheeter in outer Delhi’s Shahbad Dairy, two police personnel refused to give up and arrested him on Saturday.While on patrol duty near Gupta Colony, head constable Kuldeep and constable Neeraj received information that Ravi alias Panchi (38), a resident of Shahbad Dairy, was planning to commit a robbery, said police.

“On noticing the police team, Ravi tried to flee. A chase followed and the cops caught up with him,” deputy commissioner of police (outer north) Hareshwar Swami said. While resisting arrest, the accused allegedly attacked the policemen with a sharp-edged weapon. Kuldeep sustained two stab injuries on his upper back and near the armpit. Neeraj was struck in the waist area thrice. Two blows were blocked by his service belt, but he sustained a puncture injury on his hip. The cops, both posted with the Shahbad Dairy police station, still overpowered him, and a loaded countrymade pistol and the knife were allegedly seized from him. The policemen were taken to hospital.A case was registered under sections 109(1) (attempt to murder), 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from duty) and 221 (obstructing a public servant in the discharge of official functions) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita along with under Arms Act.Police said Ravi was a bad character of the area, with at least 12 cases registered against him, including robbery, snatching, house-breaking and Arms Act violations at police stations such as Shahbad Dairy and Samaypur Badli.Senior officers commended Kuldeep and Neeraj for their action. Their intervention helped prevent a serious offence, an officer said. “Recommendations for awards and commendations for both are under process,” he added.
