NEW DELHI: Several states across India have revised school timings and announced closures as a severe heatwave continues to push temperatures beyond 44°C in many regions. Authorities have taken precautionary measures to reduce student exposure to extreme daytime heat, with no immediate relief forecast.The impact has been widespread, prompting changes in academic schedules, early summer vacations, and temporary shutdowns. In multiple regions, temperatures have remained above normal levels, leading to administrative interventions to safeguard students’ health.Revised school timings introduced in multiple statesAs per media reports, most affected states have shifted to early morning schedules, ensuring classes conclude before peak afternoon hours. The changes apply across government and private institutions, covering primary to senior secondary levels.The Board of Secondary Education Rajasthan, Ajmer, announced that all government and non-government schools will operate morning classes for pre-primary to Class 8 from 7:30 am to 12:00 pm starting April 27 until the end of the academic session.

Chhattisgarh has preponed its summer break to April 20 – June 15, nearly two weeks earlier than usual.Odisha has announced early summer vacations starting April 27 for all schools. In West Bengal, summer holidays for state-run schools began on April 22, excluding hill districts such as Darjeeling.Tripura has ordered closure of schools from April 24 to May 1. In Jharkhand, local authorities have directed temporary shutdowns in districts experiencing severe heat conditions.Precautionary measures implemented in schoolsSchools that remain open have introduced safety protocols to minimise health risks. In Delhi and Uttarakhand, institutions have implemented “water bell” systems, ensuring students hydrate at regular intervals.Outdoor activities, assemblies, and open-air classes have been suspended during peak heat hours between 11 am and 4 pm in regions including Delhi and Telangana.Despite reduced student hours, teaching staff in states such as Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are required to stay until 1:30 pm to complete administrative work.
