Dua Lipa sues tech giant for USD 15 million: All the times when ‘Levitating’ actress flagged AI and unauthorised use of data

Dua Lipa, the prominent singer with captivating tunes and artistic lyrics, has kept her likeness unique – being the ultimate ‘IT Girl.’ While her records are off the charts, the 30-year-old singer has always stood her ground and flagged the unauthorised usage of her personality and her music.

Dua Lipa’s lawsuit for USD 15 million

The ‘New Rules’ singer recently sued Samsung Electronics for USD 15 million for using her image to sell the television sets without her authority. The lawsuit was filed in the US District Court for the Central District of California, claiming that the packaging was “designed to improperly capitalize on Ms. Lipa’s hard-earned success to promote and sell Samsung’s products,” according to BBC. Moreover, the image was taken during her 2024 Austin City Limits Festival performance, and the ‘Don’t Start Now’ singer owns the copyright of the image. The document highlights two comments from Instagram, which suggested that they would buy the television set just because the box contains the picture of Lipa. Meanwhile, the tech giant reportedly ignored the flags and demands to cease and desist the infringement of her rights.

Dua Lipa’s petition against AI Models

As the ‘Training Season’ singer makes the headline for the unauthorised use of her likeness, this is not the first time that Dua Lipa has called out a tech giant. In the previous year, the singer signed the petition to the UK government to seek protection against AI Bots and models, along with 400 other artists, including Sir Elton John, Florence Welch, Paul McCartney, and more. The open letter was addressed to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Keir Starmer. Demanding protection from AI Models by updating the copyright laws, the 400 British artists claimed that failure would lead to ‘giving away’ their work. “We are wealth creators, we reflect and promote the national stories, we are the innovators of the future, and AI needs us as much as it needs energy and computer skills,” the letter stated, as per BBC. However, not everyone agreed with the terms and conditions. Julia Willemyns, the co-founder of British Progress, shared that the measures would not stop foreign films from using their content and work. “A restrictive copyright regime would offshore AI development, chill domestic innovation, and directly harm the UK economy,” she said.

Dua Lipa’s victory in the copyright lawsuit against her song ‘Levitating’

In early 2025, Lipa won the copyright lawsuit for her song ‘Levitating,’ where the songwriters L Russell Brown and Sandy Linzer had accused her of plagiarising their 1979 disco track Wiggle and Giggle All Night and 1980 song Don Diablo. The US Judge ruled that the songs have generic similarities, highlighting the non-copyrightable musical elements that were previously used by Mozart, Gilbert and Sullivan, and the Bee Gees in their song ‘Stayin’ Alive.’
