River pollution in Moray leads to fish and bird deaths in environmental disaster
A severe pollution incident in Knockando Burn has led to the death of numerous fish, eels, and birds, impacting nearly a mile of the watercourse. Experts suspect a chemical compound, possibly with industrial origins, contaminated the burn, causing significant ecological and economic damage during the peak fishing season.

In an environmental disaster, there has been the death of many fish, eels, and birds in Knockando Burn, which drains into the River Spey within the last few days. Experts suspect that a certain chemical compound found its way into the water body and polluted the watercourse for almost a mile in length, causing significant harm to the ecosystem at the peak of the season for fishing.Media reports from the BBC, along with information released by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, have brought to light initial details regarding the event. The agency’s officials are busy investigating how the chemicals managed to contaminate the water and cause environmental hazards. As per the local authorities, the impact of the incident is considered significant and alarming. According to Duncan Ferguson, a director at the Spey Fishery Board, this has been the worst case he has experienced over the last 36 years of working along the river. He called the incident a tragedy and noted that such an occurrence could easily be prevented. The fish populations in the polluted area will suffer massive losses because the restoration process will take as long as five years due to disrupted breeding cycles. As for the possible origin of the substance contaminating the waters, it is considered to have industrial connections. An investigation is currently being conducted with the main purpose of determining whether there was negligence in managing the pollutant or the whole process occurred illegally.Indeed, the occurrence of this particular pollution during this time has caused further alarm from members of the local community as well as anglers. The River Spey is internationally recognised as one of the best locations for salmon fishing, and this particular period represents a time when the most effective form of fishing, which is fly fishing, takes place. As such, not only will the ecosystem be affected, but there may also be economic repercussions, especially in terms of the people whose livelihoods rely on fishing in that part of the country. This recent incident comes after another pollution incident in another part of the River Spey. Last month, another watercourse in the River Spey, known as the Burn of Carron, was contaminated by white paint, causing visible discolouration and odour in the water at Aberlour. This particular contamination was traced back to a roadside lay-by on the A95. Peter Graham, chairman of the Spey Fishery Board, voiced his deep concern regarding this pollution and mentioned the mental strain that occurs while trying to conserve and restore the river’s ecosystem. With this latest pollution incident, there is increased pressure from environmental groups and local authorities to improve their monitoring and impose tighter controls on dumping and industry around waterways. This case highlights the bigger question of whether rivers in the area can maintain their integrity into the future.
