With the NEET UG 2026 exam over, students are now trying to understand what rank could get them an MBBS seat, even as the answer key and results are awaited. While the exact cut-off for this year will be known only after counselling, past trends give a clear idea of where students stand. The rank required depends on several factors, including whether the student is applying under the All India Quota (AIQ) or state quota, the category, and the type of college whether government or private. Seats in government colleges are limited and usually close at much higher ranks compared to private colleges.Under the 15 per cent All India Quota, MBBS seats in top government colleges generally close at very high ranks. In recent years, general category candidates needed ranks within the top few thousand to secure a seat in leading colleges. For mid-tier government colleges, the closing ranks have gone higher, but still remain competitive.State quota counselling, which covers 85 per cent of seats in government colleges, shows wider variation. Cut-offs differ from state to state depending on the number of seats and competition levels. Some states with more medical colleges tend to have relatively higher closing ranks compared to others.Private medical colleges offer another option, but the rank requirement is usually lower compared to government institutions. However, fees in private colleges are significantly higher, which becomes an important factor for many students during counselling.Category also plays a key role in determining cut-offs. Candidates from reserved categories such as SC, ST and OBC often have different closing ranks compared to the general category, as per counselling rules. With the answer key and results yet to be released, students are advised to use this time to understand the counselling process, check past cut-offs and shortlist colleges. The final picture will become clearer once official ranks are announced and counselling begins.

NEET UG 2026: How counselling happens?

NEET UG counseling follows a structured, multi-round process split between All India Quota (AIQ) and State Quota seats. There are 15% AIQ seats managed centrally by Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for government, deemed, central universities, ESIC, AFMC and is open to all India candidates.85% state quota seats are handled by respective state authorities (e.g., UP DGME, Maharashtra CET Cell) for domicile candidates in government colleges. After NEET results are declared, candidates have to register online using their NEET roll number and details. A security deposit is required, which varies by category.Candidates select their preferred colleges and courses. Choices must be locked before the deadline. Authorities release merit-based seat allotment results in multiple rounds such as Round 1, Round 2, mop-up and stray vacancy.
