Over the years, the rich olive groves that line the Peloponnese have remained a mystery under their rhizomes. When tourists and enthusiasts visit the marble ruins of ancient Olympia to explore the same terrain as the world’s elite athletes, however, an important portion of the tale remains a secret. The iconic site on which the Olympic Games were born wasn’t only a dusty spot with trails and temples. New research suggests the site was a bustling and well-connected waterway that might welcome visitors via boat all the way to the sanctuary’s door.The current landscape can be described as an act of nature. For hundreds of years, over the course of time, Kladeos as well as the Alpheios rivers repeatedly flooded in the past, submerging the initial base of the earth under more than twenty feet of sand and silt. The thick layer of soil is like the remains of a time capsule that has preserved archaeological sites that archaeologists had believed existed for a long time; however, they were never able to access them. The group of researchers has sifted through the dirt with advanced technology. What they discovered is challenging all we believed we knew about the way ancient people journeyed to the sports.High tech meets ancient historyFinding out the secrets of these layers was not a straightforward task for the research group led by Sarah Baumler from the Institute of Geosciences at Kiel University. Since the layer of sediment is deep, the traditional instruments like ground-penetrating radars often do not offer a clear view. To get around this, they used an amalgamation of electrical resistivity as well as seismic measurement for the purpose of being able to “see” into the earth. The findings, released in Archaeological Prospection, revealed an enormous rectangular basin that lies beneath six meters.The basin in question is about the size of the modern-day city block. When studying the soil in the basin, scientists discovered evidence of freshwater species which flourished in the area beginning in the 5th century BC up to the 6th century AD. This is important because it is in perfect alignment with the peak that was the Panhellenic Games. Although some researchers were unsure if this was an old bathhouse or disposal system, the massive dimensions and the kinds of biomarkers in the soil indicate an even larger thing that is a harbour basin.The logistics behind the old games were always an insurmountable problem. It was believed by historians that the visitors were required to put their boats in a remote port and then travel for 14 miles in the scorching heat to get to the sacred site. But the finding of the basin indicates an even more advanced arrangement. If ships could be able to navigate this river to a greater distance from the area, it would transform Olympia as an in the midst of the inland landscape into a lively, easily accessible marine place.

The sanctuary is protected from the elementsIn addition to the thrill of potential harbours, the study also revealed the way in which ancient civilisations battled the forces of nature, which eventually dug the area. They were able to track the course of an enormous flood-proof barrier, which was also known as The Kladeos wall. This levee is a significant work of engineering that stands nearly 9 feet tall and is a good deal wider. Its function was a simple one, however crucial: to prevent the rivers’ unpredictable waters from ruining the sacred sites of the temples as well as athletic fields.The exact location of the wall can help historians better understand the structure of the “suburbs” of the sanctuary. This proves that the Greeks were not only master builders of marble and stone, but also savvy urban planners who were aware of the potential dangers of building in an area that was surrounded by a river. The research, which took inspiration from the geological records discovered within the Journal of Archaeological Science, shows that there’s much more to Olympia than meets the eye.In the present, the area is completely covered with the same olive trees that made the study so challenging. They affected the equipment used for research, which forced researchers to develop unique digital filters designed to eliminate all “noise” caused by the nature of the water within the trees. This unique blend of both history and nature is the reason that makes Olympia an exceptional place. We can identify these structures using the outside, but the next step will be careful excavation for us to view these walls with our own eyes.The discovery is a reminder that the past is usually layered. Behind the feet of every visitor to Olympia is a complex system of embankments and waterways, which once served as the most spectacular spectacle in the history of ancient times. It appears that the greats from the past did not just need to run fast in the race; they were also part of a planet that was designed to link individuals across oceans.
