Largest underwater flag and human stack in Andaman set to break Guinness World Record at Swaraj Dweep; here’s what travellers need to know

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are preparing for an unusual global spotlight this weekend. Two underwater world record attempts are planned at Swaraj Dweep, also known as Havelock Island. One involves a massive Indian flag being unfurled beneath the sea. The other focuses on forming a human stack underwater, reaching a notable height. The events are scheduled for May 2 and May 3, 2026, and are expected to draw attention from both tourists and record officials, according to the Andaman & Nicobar Administration official reports. Local authorities, trained divers, and technical teams are involved in the preparation. The initiative appears aimed at boosting eco-tourism while placing the islands on the global adventure map in a distinctive way.

Andaman to host the largest underwater flag unfurling and human stack attempt at Swaraj Dweep

The first attempt is titled “Largest Flag Unfurled Underwater”. It is planned near Radha Nagar Beach, one of the most well-known beaches in the region. The Indian flag being used is reportedly around 60 metres by 40 metres in size. Divers will work together to spread and display it beneath the sea surface. The visual impact, if successful, is expected to be striking. The second attempt is called “Tallest Human Stack Underwater”. This will take place near the lighthouse area, close to the Swaraj Dweep jetty. Divers will try to form a structured human formation underwater. The target height is said to be around 10 metres. It is a coordinated activity, requiring timing, control, and steady underwater positioning.Swaraj Dweep is already known for clear waters and coral-rich diving zones. The area around Radha Nagar Beach is often mentioned for its calm sea conditions. Visibility underwater tends to be better than in many coastal locations in India. The lighthouse zone near the jetty is another active diving spot. It has deeper sections suitable for structured underwater activities like this. Local tourism officials appear to have chosen these locations carefully, based on safety and water conditions.

Andaman underwater record attempts: Safety measures

The events are being managed with support from multiple departments. Trained scuba divers are participating along with technical support teams. Safety crews are also present in the planning stages.Guinness World Records guidelines are reportedly being followed. That includes structured measurement rules and controlled underwater conditions. The presence of Lieutenant Governor DK Joshi is also part of the official schedule, adding administrative attention to the attempt according to the Andaman & Nicobar Administration official reports. Preparation has included practice dives and coordination drills. Underwater visibility, diver spacing, and timing are all being checked repeatedly. The setup is technical, not casual, and appears designed to avoid disruption during execution.

Why Andaman is pushing underwater records

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been positioning themselves as a scuba diving and marine tourism destination for years. Coral reefs, marine biodiversity, and calm waters already attract divers. This attempt seems aimed at adding global visibility. Large-scale underwater visuals are rare, especially coordinated flag displays and human formations. Officials reportedly see it as a way to combine national symbolism with tourism promotion. There is also a focus on eco-tourism messaging. The events are being presented alongside diving activities, mangrove kayaking, and marine exploration. It fits into a wider attempt to highlight underwater ecosystems in the region.

What visitors can expect during the weekend

Tourists already in Andaman around May 2 and 3 might witness controlled diving activity near specific zones. Access to exact underwater sites will likely be restricted for safety reasons. Nearby attractions remain open. Radha Nagar Beach continues to be a major relaxation point. Elephant Beach offers water sports like jet skiing and sea walking. Glass-bottom boat rides are also expected to run normally.Local operators appear prepared for increased attention. Some travellers may plan their visit specifically around the underwater record attempts, while others may experience it indirectly through media coverage and on-site viewing points.
