King Charles III delivered a sharp retort at the White House state dinner, telling Donald Trump that Americans “would be speaking French” without Britain. The exchange came as both leaders raised toasts in Washington, where Charles referenced Trump’s past comments about Europe’s dependence on the United States.“You recently commented, Mr. President, that if it were not for the United States, European countries would be speaking German. Dare I say that, if it wasn’t for us, you’d be speaking French,” King Charles said.The moment came as tensions linger over the ongoing war in Iran and strains in the transatlantic alliance. Charles continued his light-hearted approach, joking about Trump’s redevelopment of the White House East Wing and adding: “I am sorry to say that we British, of course, made our own attempt at real estate redevelopment of the White House in 1814.” He also described the dinner as “a very considerable improvement on the Boston Tea Party,” underlining how far relations have evolved since the American colonies broke from British rule.Trump, in turn, praised the King’s earlier address to Congress, saying: “I want to congratulate Charles on having made a fantastic speech today at Congress. He got the Democrats to stand — I’ve never been able to do that.” He later added he was “very jealous” of the reception.Beyond the humour, the visit carried clear diplomatic weight. Charles used his speech to Congress to urge continued US engagement with allies, warning that the relationship “cannot rest on past achievements” and calling for “unyielding resolve” in supporting Ukraine and maintaining global partnerships.At the dinner, the King also presented Trump with the bell from HMS Trump, a British submarine launched in 1944, saying: “May it stand as a testimony to our nations’ shared history and shining future. And should you ever need to get hold of us, well, just give us a ring.”The four-day visit, marking 250 years of American independence, has been widely seen as an effort to steady a relationship tested by geopolitical disagreements.
