Kanpur man killed twins for refusing to stop cartoons? Cops probe if murders were planned

KANPUR: Watching cartoons turned fatal for 11-year-old twin sisters in the Kidwai Nagar area after their father came home drunk on Sunday night and told them to switch off the TV. When the girls refused despite being promised a trip to the theatre for a cartoon film, he allegedly killed them, police said.Police said the 48-year-old accused, Shashi Ranjan Mishra, often came home drunk at night and misbehaved with his wife. He was intoxicated on the day of the crime as well. However, police said they were still puzzled because the incident could not have happened in a fit of rage. He had purchased the weapon four or five days earlier, suggesting it was meticulously planned, they added. DCP Deependra Nath Chaudhary said every aspect is being investigated.Shashiranjan, a sales manager at a pharmaceutical company, spent thousands of rupees installing CCTV cameras across the flat for his family’s safety. In the two-bedroom flat, six cameras were installed from inside to outside. Shashiranjan placed two cameras outside the flat for protection against outsiders. Cameras were installed in the drawing room, kitchen, bedroom and lobby.Mishra allegedly strangled and slit the throats of his daughters after sedating them early Sunday. He was arrested from the scene after he reported the crime on Dial-112.The bodies of the twins, both Class 5 students, were found lying in a pool of blood in their room.Police said Mishra called around 4:30 am to report the incident. After killing his daughters, he sat near the bodies and called the police, saying: “I have killed my children. Please come.”When police arrived, the door was locked. His wife, Reshma Kshetri, 40, opened it after the bell rang. On learning of her husband’s call, she rushed to his room and found her daughters dead on the floor with Mishra sitting beside them.On Sunday evening, the girls were buried in the local graveyard with the assistance of police and locals in the presence of their mother.
