Imagine the last day of your mountain trip, the sun setting, the packs packed, your thoughts turning to your journey home. It was at such a time that Charles Doolittle Walcott, Secretary of the Smithsonian, encountered a unique piece of stone while riding a horse through a rugged part of Yoho National Park in British Columbia in August 1909. There was one dark piece of stone blocking his path, but when he moved it aside, he found something that seemed unimaginable: the delicate shadows of ancient soft-bodied life forms.Whereas Walcott’s entire life consisted of hunting for fossils, this particular find proved somewhat unique. Typically, fossils represent only hard body structures like shells, teeth, or bones, while all the rest decomposes too fast to leave any traces behind. However, the shale found at the remote mountain pass seemed like a kind of prehistoric high-definition camera that captured detailed silhouettes of Cambrian Explosion species. This brief encounter on a mountain path did not simply end an exploration period but laid the foundation for scientific breakthroughs that continue over 100 years after Walcott first discovered the Burgess Shale formation.A geologic wonder of the Canadian rockiesThe scale of discovery was so great that Walcott spent another 15 years exploring the area and managed to collect over 65,000 fossils at one point. This was far from being pure chance, since the Burgess Shale formation became known to be a unique phenomenon called a lagerstätte, which is a geological term referring to a deposit with exceptional preservation. In other words, the rocks found at the location contain fossils of bizarre creatures that appear almost lifelike, some sporting five eyes and spikes on their bodies.Perhaps one of the most amazing aspects of this site is that it preserved not just an outline but the actual chemical composition of the organisms. In the paper titled Discovery of 505-million-year-old chitin in the basal demosponge Vauxia gracilenta, researchers have discovered actual biological materials, such as chitin, in the fossils at this location. As a result, this rock formation has not just saved the outlines of ancient sea fauna but also kept its organic tissues intact for over 500 million years, which is extremely unusual in palaeontology. Now, researchers can explore the anatomy of creatures that became extinct much earlier than the first dinosaurs appeared on Earth.
This geological wonder, a lagerstätte, provided unprecedented insights into the Cambrian Explosion, showcasing diverse body plans and even retaining organic tissues. The significance of the “strange” fossils todayThis fossil bed represents the best source of information available on the development of complex life. Prior to Walcott’s expedition, science had an incomplete image of early animal evolution. However, thanks to the Burgess Shale, humanity learned about an incredibly diverse and colourful ecosystem where nature tried out many different body plans. Some of them survived to become the foundation of all the living organisms, while others became evolutionary dead ends.The scientific weight of the site continues to grow as new outcrops are found. In the research paper published in the Nature Communications journal, experts explain that Walcott’s original locality was just the beginning. Newer sites in the same region have revealed even more soft-bodied taxa, showing that this “exquisite preservation” was part of a larger ancient environment. These finds help us understand how the oldest animal communities on the seafloor interacted, what they ate, and how they survived in a world that was still very young.The discovery by Walcott is a subtle lesson that the greatest breakthroughs tend to happen when least expected. In a brief trip along a path on a mountain, Walcott was able to open doors into an ancient world estimated to be nearly half a billion years old. The moment of slowing down to examine a piece of “black rock” led to the opening of the gateways to the emergence of life forms on Earth.
