"I almost died": Former NFL QB recalls near-death experience while filming The Bachelor

Former NFL QB Jesse Palmer nearly died in Fiji, and for a moment, the story sounded less like a TV mishap and more like something far more serious. What began as a quiet break after filming quickly turned into a fight against nature. The longtime host, known for his calm presence on screen, found himself alone on a shrinking strip of sand as the tide rose without warning. It happened during Season 20 of The Bachelorette in 2023, when Palmer stayed back after a one-on-one date between Charity Lawson and Dotun Olubeko. The setting looked idyllic. Within minutes, it turned unpredictable. What followed was not part of any script, and certainly not something he had prepared for.

Jesse Palmer nearly died in Fiji: What happened on that secluded island and how he survived

Jesse Palmer later described the sequence with a mix of disbelief and clarity. “Charity [Lawson] and Dotun [Olubeko] had this amazing one-on-one date on this secluded little island in the middle of the water,” he said. The idea to stay back felt harmless at first. “I watched them on their date and thought about how I’d love to just go out there by myself and spend a couple hours on that beach when we were done filming. So I went out there.”Then the weather shifted. “But then the storm blew in, and the tide started climbing up onto the beach—to the point where the beach almost got completely covered by the ocean. I’m just out in the middle of the ocean, and there’s nothing there. And I thought to myself, I’m just going to have to tread water and hope a boat comes by and picks me up.”For a brief stretch, the situation felt overwhelming. “I did have some bad thoughts for a moment,” he admitted. “Like, this is so crazy and ironic if this is how it ends.” A boat eventually arrived, just in time, cutting short what could have been a far worse outcome. It was not the only close call he mentioned. “I once got bit by a dog on a beach. And I almost died in Fiji,” Palmer said, reflecting on the unpredictability that has followed parts of his television journey.Long before this, Palmer had already built a second career away from football. After his NFL days, including time with the New York Giants and a stint in Canada, he moved into broadcasting and reality television. His transition began with The Bachelor in 2004 and gradually expanded into hosting and analysis roles across networks.Even now, that quarterback mindset stays with him. “I look at everything through the eyes of a quarterback, game planning and broadcasting,” he said. “That’s how I watch at home. It drives my wife crazy because I’ll be on the couch talking as if I were an analyst. She’ll say, ‘Can you just shut up and let them talk, and we can watch this game?’ We often turn down the volume because I talk so much during the game—it’s really hard to switch that off.”
