How to unclog a toilet fast without a plunger

Picture this: your guests will arrive in 30 minutes, and your toilet is overflowing. The plunger is nowhere in sight. You panic because there is no way a plumber would show up within 30 minutes and get to the bottom of this. What if you could fix it without cancelling your plans or spending hundreds on a service call? Don’t panic, you’ve got this. With a few household items lying around and the right technique, you’ll have an unclogged toilet in minutes. Here are three proven techniques that can restore your toilet to working order.

Hot water + dish soap

This is the fastest solution and works for the majority of toilet clogs in under 20 minutes. Squirt a generous amount of liquid soap directly into the toilet bowl. Do not skimp on it. The soap acts as a lubricant to help break down the blockage. Now you need to boil a kettle of water. You want it hot, not at a rolling boil. Carefully pour the hot water from waist height into the bowl to create pressure, combined with the lubricating effect of the soap. Next, wait for 15–20 minutes and flush.

Baking soda + vinegar

While the dish soap and hot water method works in almost 70% of cases, if it doesn’t, you can try this chemical approach. You need two ingredients from your kitchen—baking soda and white vinegar. Pour one cup of baking soda into the drain. Now immediately follow it with two cups of white vinegar. The fizzing reaction will work on your clog. Let it sit for 30–45 minutes (or longer for stubborn clogs). After that, flush with hot water to clear away the loosened debris. This method is highly effective.

The wire coat hanger snake

Sometimes, you might need a mechanical solution. Now that you don’t have a plunger, here’s what you can do. Grab a wire coat hanger from your closet. Straighten it out, leaving a small hook at one end. Insert the hooked end into the drain. Now carefully check around to break up or grab the clog. Work slowly so that you avoid scratching the porcelain. Once you’ve loosened the blockage, flush with hot water to wash away the debris. These methods work when you don’t have a plunger. They are proven techniques that can handle almost any toilet emergency. You’ve got this, even without a plunger.
