The entire process is online. And it’s handled by the Government of India through an official portal. If you are planning to get a VIP number for your next car or bike, here’s how it works.

How to get VIP number for your vehicle: Quick guide

To begin with, you need to visit the official fancy number website: https://fancy.parivahan.gov.in. Create an account using your mobile number and email ID. OTPs are sent for verification. Once verified, your account is activated instantly. After logging in, select the state where your vehicle will be registered. Choose Delhi. You then need to select the vehicle category. This could be a private vehicle, a commercial one, or a two-wheeler.The portal will then show the current series of registration numbers available. You can browse through them and check what’s open. If the number you want is already taken, you’ll have to wait. A new series usually opens after a few days. The timeline can vary depending on the RTO you select.

Once you finalise your preferred number, you can move to the payment page. Multiple payment options are available. After completing the payment, a receipt is generated online. This receipt is important. You must share it with your dealership during vehicle registration. There’s a deadline to keep in mind. The booked number must be used within one month. If the vehicle is not registered within this period, the booking gets cancelled. The amount paid is also forfeited. This facility is only for new vehicles. Already registered vehicles are not eligible.Pricing is another key factor. Fancy number prices differ from state to state. In Delhi, the registration fee is Rs 1,000, and it is non-refundable. Apart from this, buyers also have to pay a reserve price for the number they choose. Prices can start from Rs 1,500 and go up to several lakhs. Fixed-price numbers are allotted on a first-come, first-served basis. Some numbers are in very high demand. These are allotted through an online e-auction. For instance, 0001 is considered the most premium number and costs around Rs 5 lakh. For such numbers, buyers must take part in the e-auction. Bidding usually remains open for a few days. If you win, the remaining amount must be paid within five days.Once the payment is completed, an allotment letter is issued. This letter needs to be collected from the concerned authority in Delhi within 90 days. It must then be submitted to the dealer at the time of registration.
