Eye of Horus: Ancient Egyptian symbol of protection meets modern third eye beliefs

The Eye of Horus is a symbol that has stood the test of time and has much significance in historical and modern spiritual practices. In ancient Egypt the eye was a symbol of protection and healing. Today, it is associated more and more with the idea of the third eye, a metaphor for enhanced intuition and inner knowledge.

An old protective sign

The Eye of Horus is an ancient Egyptian mythological object. Based on the legend of Horus, the falcon-headed sky god who battles his uncle Set to avenge his father Osiris. Horus was wounded in the battle and lost an eye, but the god of wisdom, Thoth, put it back. The restoration was a symbol of healing, renewal and divine providence. The ancient Egyptians carved the eye of Horus on tombs, wore it as an amulet and used it in rituals to ward off negative forces and ensure safety in life and the afterlife. But historians say the symbol was more than an ornament. It was believed to have power of guarding. A spiritual protection from danger and injury.

Inner sight the eye of providence

Over the years the Eye of Horus has become a symbol of many other things than its original culture. In New Age spirituality it is often associated with the third eye, generally associated with perception, intuition and higher consciousness. The third eye is a concept more related to the Eastern traditions especially in relation to the Ajna Chakra but due to the visual similarity and symbolic congruity many have associated the Eye of Horus with inner sight and consciousness. Today spiritual practitioners see the symbol as seeing beyond the physical world with clear thought, insight and a greater understanding of your surroundings.

Old wisdom and new reason married

But experts warn that although the Eye of Horus is used in spiritual practices across the globe, it does indeed have its roots in ancient Egyptian belief systems. The third eye interpretation is a modern one, but the common themes of protection and higher awareness naturally bridge the two. The shape is also geometric and has been discussed in relation to the human brain and perception, again linking it to consciousness and awareness.

Symbols still matter today

Today, the Eye of Horus can still be seen in jewelry, tattoos, art and wellness practices. It’s a two for one for many. You feel protected and it is a symbol of your own awakening and intuition. The Eye of Horus Saving ancient cultures, inspiring modern seekers. It has changed with the times but its heart is still a symbol of protection, healing, and the power of inner vision that is timeless.
