Contractual clerk at state university caught taking ₹50,000 bribe

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Vigilance Establishment on Tuesday arrested a contractual clerk at Maharaja Suhel Dev University, Azamgarh, for accepting a ₹50,000 bribe at the registrar’s office.According to officials, Surendra Singh, manager of Ram Badhan Singh Mahila Mahavidyalaya in Raunapar (Kadipur), Azamgarh, had approached the vigilance authorities alleging that a bribe of ₹3 lakh was being demanded by the registrar, Dr. Anjani Mishra for extending the permanent affiliation of his college by one year.The victim alleged that this amount had be routed through the clerk, Sanjay, who worked at the registrar’s office.Acting on the written complaint, vigilance officials conducted a discreet verification, which confirmed the allegations.Subsequently, a trap was laid, and Sanjay was apprehended while accepting ₹50,000 in cash as part of the alleged bribe.During a search of his almirah, the vigilance team also recovered an additional ₹1,87,500, suspected to be illicit money. The accused reportedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the recovered cash.Officials indicated that the role of other individuals named in the complaint, including the registrar, is under investigation.A case has been registered against the accused, and further legal proceedings are underway.The Vigilance Establishment reiterated its commitment to cracking down on corruption and urged citizens to report any demand for bribes by public servants on its anti-corruption helpline numbers: 9454401866 and 9454401870.
