In a recent update from Uttarakhand, the sacred portals of the revered Badrinath Temple will open in April. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Badrinath in the high Himalayas in Chamoli district, is among Hinduism’s most revered pilgrimage shrines. It sits at an altitude of 3100 meters and is a part of Char Dham Yatra. Given extreme winter weather and heavy snowfall, the shrine is accessible only for a small period. According to ANI , the holy doors will reopen on April 23, 2026. The reopening of Badrinath’s kapats (holy doors) is an auspicious date for devotees and priests. The day will also mark the official start of the Char Dham Yatra. The sacred pilgrimage circuit includes Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri (in Uttrakhand, also known as Chotta Char Dham). Manujendra Shah, the present titular Maharaja of Tehri Garhwal, said on Friday on the occasion of the Basant Panchami festival, while speaking to ANI, that it was a matter of pride to announce that the gates of Badrinath Dham will reopen on April 23 at 6:15 am, and added that the Gadu Ghada ceremony will be held on April 7.The auspicious date and timing for the opening of the temple is traditionally announced on Basant Panchami, which is today (23 January). The date was announced by priests and temple authorities after consulting the panchang or lunar calendar. What is Gadu Ghada ceremony For those who don’t know, Gadu Dhaga, also known as the Tel Kalash Yatra, is a traditional ceremony which marks the beginning of preparations for the reopening of Badrinath Temple. During this ceremony, sesame oil is ceremonially sent from Raj Darbar, Tehri, to be used for the anointing (Abhishek) of Lord Badri Vishal when the temple doors reopen.2026 Opening: Dates and Expected Schedule

Daily Darshan and Aarti TimingsMorning Darshan & Aarti: Generally around 4:30–6 AM.Midday Pause: The shrine shuts for a brief time around mid-day before reopening in the afternoon.Evening Darshan & Aarti: Usually until 8–9 PM.These timings are subject to change Closing CeremonyThe sacred doors were officially shut for winters on 25 November 2025. Just like opening, closing day also holds immense importance. During ceremonial closing, the idol of the presiding deity, Lord Badri Vishal is carried to the Narasimha Temple in Joshimath. This is where the deity is worshipped until the temple doors open for summer months.Rules devotees should knowThere are strict temple rules which devotees must be aware of:Ban on mobile phones and cameras: So you can’t carry mobile phones and cameras inside the temple complexes.
