‘Attempt to create protective air buffer’: Final moments of mother and son found holding each other in MP boat tragedy | Bhopal News

Jabalpur Boat Tragedy: Mother Found Clutching Child After Bargi Dam Capsize, 9 Dead

JABALPUR: Even as search teams, including the Army, continued combing the waters of Bargi Dam on Friday morning, a moment of grief brought operations to a standstill when the eighth and ninth bodies were recovered, that of a woman found with her four year-old child still in her arms.Rescuers said both were wearing life jackets, but the child remained tightly held against the mother. Identified as Marina Massey, 39, and her son Trishaan, who had travelled from Delhi for a vacation, were among those who perished when the cruise boat capsized.

Rescue personnel said the child was pressed against his mother’s chest, held within the contour of her body. “When we brought them out, they were still holding each other,” a rescuer said, describing a moment that has since come to define the human cost of the tragedy.Officials, piecing together the final moments, believe that as the vessel destabilised and began to take in water, the mother made a rapid, instinctive decision, pulling her son into her own life jacket in an attempt to maximise his chances of survival. The two were inside the lower cabin, a confined space that likely flooded within minutes, leaving little to no escape window.“In such enclosed compartments, once water ingress reaches a critical level, disorientation and pressure leave passengers with seconds, not minutes. Despite having a life jacket, the pair are believed to have been trapped before they could reach an exit,” said an officer who was part of the rescue operation. He said the positioning of the bodies suggests a final deliberate act of a mother attempting to create a protective air buffer around her child in a rapidly collapsing environment. It was a last effort shaped by instinct rather than time, he added.Officials noted that it remains unclear why there were no dedicated life jackets for children on board. While Marina and Trishaan could not be saved, her husband Pradeep Massey and their daughter Siya survived.
