Jyotika on working with Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari during respectful intimate scenes in ‘System’: 'More than a male director would'
Jyotika is back in Hindi films with ‘System’, a legal drama also starring Sonakshi Sinha, directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari. In an interview, Jyotika said working with a female director is ‘always comfortable’, adding that Ashwiny listened to them more than a male director would. The film streams on OTT on May 22.

After a long gap, Jyotika is making a strong comeback in Hindi films. The actor first stepped into cinema with a Hindi release back in 1998 before finding massive success in Tamil cinema, with only occasional appearances in Bollywood over the years. But in 2024, she made a full-fledged return to Hindi films after more than 25 years. With her third Hindi film in just two years on the horizon, Jyotika is clearly making up for lost time. She will next be seen in ‘System’, a legal drama directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, which also stars Sonakshi Sinha.

Jyotika on why working with Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari on ‘System’ was ‘always comfortable’

Ahead of ‘System’s release, Jyotika spoke to Hindustan Times about the film, her role, and her experience working with Ashwiny. The film marks the first time Jyotika, Sonakshi Sinha, and Ashwiny have worked together. Jyotika says working with a female director is ‘always comfortable’ and feels there is a natural understanding between them. “She listened to us, probably a little more than a male director would on a set,” she quips, with a smile. She also felt a deeper connection working with a woman. “There is more of a connection with your own gender. Your process of thinking connects more, rather,” she says.

Jyotika also appreciated the way sensitive scenes were handled on set. “I also feel a lot of intimate scenes were shot respectfully. She shot them the way she would want to see them and the way we would want ourselves seen on screen,” she adds.

Sonakshi also talked about the director and said, “Only a woman understands another woman in a way that is real. I have always had a great experience working with women directors. I prefer it. They approach everything with a different sensibility, sensitivity, and vulnerability. That is very important in bringing out such characters that are flawed, real, and human.”

When and where to watch ‘System’ on OTT?

‘System’ is about a court stenographer with a simple life, played by Jyotika, who helps a young public prosecutor played by Sonakshi Sinha. The film also stars Ashutosh Gowariker as a well-known defense lawyer who is also the father of Sonakshi’s character. Directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and produced by Pammi Baweja, Harman Baweja, and Smitha Baliga, the film will be out on Amazon Prime Video on May 22.
