Delhi Govt orders summer remedial classes for Classes 9, 10 and 12 to boost board exam performance

The Delhi government’s Directorate of Education (DoE) has directed all government schools to conduct remedial classes for students of Classes IX, X, and XII during the summer vacation period, aiming to strengthen academic performance and bridge learning gaps ahead of the new academic cycle, according to the ANI report. In a circular issued by the School Branch of the Directorate of Education on May 8, the department said that while summer vacation in government schools will continue from May 11 to June 30, special remedial sessions for students of Classes 9, 10 and 12 will be held from May 11 to May 23, excluding Sundays. The move comes at a time when schools are under increasing pressure to improve board examination performance and reduce academic weaknesses among students requiring additional support.

Focus on Science and Mathematics

According to the circular, the remedial classes for Classes IX and X will primarily focus on Science and Mathematics subjects. However, heads of schools have been given the flexibility to include additional subjects depending on academic requirements, result analysis and the availability of teachers. For Class XII students, the subjects for remedial teaching will be decided by the respective Heads of School (HoS) based on student needs and academic priorities. The Directorate stated that the classes are intended to reinforce key concepts and improve overall learning outcomes.

Timings and structure of classes

The remedial sessions will run for three periods daily. Student classes will be conducted from 7:30 am to 10:30 am, while teachers will remain on duty from 7:20 am to 11:00 am.Each period will be of one-hour duration. In double-shift schools, the classes will be organised separately in different wings to avoid operational disruptions. The schedule released by the Directorate is as follows:

  • First Period: 7:30 am to 8:30 am
  • Second Period: 8:30 am to 9:30 am
  • Third Period: 9:30 am to 10:30 am

Uniform mandatory, attendance to be marked online

The Directorate has also made it mandatory for students to attend the remedial classes in a proper school uniform. Schools have been instructed to maintain online attendance records for all participating students. In another important directive, parental consent in the form of a No Objection Certificate (NOC) will be compulsory for students attending these summer classes.Heads of schools have also been asked to prepare the remedial class timetable before the commencement of summer vacation and submit it to the concerned Deputy Director of Education (Zone).

Schools asked to identify needy students

The circular further emphasised that “special attention” must be given to needy students who require academic reinforcement.Schools have also been directed to inform students and parents through all available communication channels to ensure participation and awareness. The decision signals the Delhi government’s continued push to improve foundational learning and board-level preparedness in government schools, particularly for students struggling in core subjects.(With inputs from ANI)
