How to maximise your e-scooter’s range in city rides: Simple tips

Range anxiety is still one of the biggest concerns for electric scooter owners in India. On paper, most modern e-scooters quote impressive range figures. But real-world city riding is very different. Stop-go traffic, flyovers, potholes, extra load and hot weather can all bring the number down. The good news is that a few simple habits can help you get more kilometres out of every charge. The first thing is throttle control. Hard acceleration may drain the battery faster. In city traffic, quick bursts of speed between signals usually do not save much time anyway. A smoother and more gradual throttle input helps conserve charge.Ride modes matter too. Many riders leave the scooter in Sport or Power mode because it feels quicker. But for daily office commutes and local errands, Eco or City mode usually makes more sense. These modes limit aggressive power delivery and can noticeably improve range.Tyre pressure is another area many people ignore. Under-inflated tyres create more rolling resistance, which means the motor has to work harder. In Indian conditions, tyre pressure can drop without being obvious. Checking it every week can make a real difference.

Try to avoid carrying unnecessary weight. A heavy backpack, extra luggage or even regular double riding will affect efficiency. More weight means more energy needed, especially in traffic and on inclines.Regenerative braking can help, but only if used smartly. Instead of accelerating hard and then braking late, try anticipating traffic. Ease off early when you see a red light or congestion ahead. This allows the system to recover a bit more energy.Battery health also matters in the long run. Frequent fast charging is convenient, but regular slow charging is generally better for battery longevity. In India’s summer months, avoid charging immediately after a long ride if the battery feels hot. Let it cool down first.Route choice can also change real-world range. A slightly longer road with fewer signals and less congestion can often use less charge than a shorter but heavily packed route.
