Amarillo Pickleball Club tragedy as entire team dies in Texas plane crash on way to tournament

A happy trip to a pickleball tournament turned into a heartbreaking tragedy in Texas. A small plane carrying five members of the Amarillo Pickleball Club crashed late Thursday night near Wimberley, southwest of Austin. All five people on board died at the scene. Officials said the aircraft went down around 11 pm while heading to New Braunfels for a scheduled event.The news has shaken the local sports community. The group was traveling together to play in a tournament, something they had likely been looking forward to. Instead, the journey ended in a devastating accident. Authorities quickly reached the site, but there was nothing that could be done. The loss has left families, friends, and fellow players in deep shock.

The Amarillo Pickleball Club later confirmed the names of the five victims. Seren Wilson, Brooke Skypala, Stacy Hedrick, Glen Appling, and Hayden Dillard were all part of the close-knit team. In a statement, the club shared its grief and asked for support for the families.“Today, the Club has received terrible news that we all must mourn in the loss of five members of our Amarillo pickleball family,” the club said. “Please keep their precious families in your thoughts and prayers.”The impact of the crash was severe. According to Sgt. Billy Ray from the Texas Department of Public Safety, the plane was moving at a high speed when it hit the ground. It then caught fire. Officials also said there is no sign of a mid-air collision, which suggests the crash happened suddenly during the flight.People living nearby described a frightening moment. One resident, Stacey Rohr, said, “It was so close I felt like it was the back of my place up in flames.” Others said they heard a loud noise and felt the ground shake.Flight tracking data showed the aircraft was on its way to New Braunfels National Airport. Another plane heading to the same location landed safely, which highlights how unexpected this crash was.The tragedy has also affected the wider pickleball community. The tournament at the Cranky Pickle in New Braunfels was canceled after the news. Martin Robertson, head pro at the venue, said, “We’re very heavy hearted, heartbroken from this. The pickleball community is very tight knit. Everybody knows everybody.”The investigation is now being handled by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board. Officials are still working to understand exactly what went wrong.
