Google is said to be in talks with the Department of War (previously Department of Defense) to bring its powerful Gemini AI models into the heart of the US military. However, according to a report from The Information (via news agency Reuters), the tech giant is insisting on strict contract terms to ensure the technology isn’t misused. The report claims that the the deal will allow the Pentagon to deploy Gemini in “classified settings”, which is nothing but highly secure environments where the nation’s most sensitive data is handled. While the agreement would allow the military to use the AI for ‘all lawful uses,’ Google has reportedly proposed specific language to prevent the technology from crossing certain ethical lines.

Google likely wants same conditions as Anthropic

The company wants to ensure its AI is not used for domestic mass surveillance (which is monitoring American citizens on a large scale) and deploying weapons that can act on their own without “appropriate human control.”Reports claimed that these two conditions were the point of contention between the Pentagon and Anthropic. Earlier this year, Anthropic refused to allow its AI (Claude) to be used for autonomous weapons or mass surveillance, following which the AI company was declared a supply chain risk – a designation rarely applied to US firms – leading to a lawsuit by Anthropic claiming violation of First Amendment rights.Conversely, OpenAI has partnered with the Pentagon, moving in to fill the gap left by Anthropic. The ChatGPT-maker received criticism over quickly grabbing the opportunity. The company later said it was working with the Pentagon to revise the language of the contract. This also suggests tension between Silicon Valley’s ethical standards and the government’s push for advanced military tech using AI.

Why this deal matters for Google

A partnership with the US government would be a major win for Alphabet (Google’s parent company), helping it strengthen its ties to the government. At the same time, the US is moving aggressively to embed AI into its systems to cut costs and speed up slow administrative tasks.
