19-year-old NUJS boy falls off 6th floor at hostel, dies

KOLKATA: A 19-year-old first-year student of West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) died on Monday after reportedly falling from the sixth floor of a hostel building in Salt Lake, police said. No suicide note has been recovered so far.The deceased, Juven Joss Jebin, a resident of Kerala, was found lying bleeding on the ground by fellow hostel residents. He was taken to Bidhannagar sub-divisional Hospital, where he was declared dead.Police have registered a case of unnatural death and initiated an investigation into the circumstances leading to the incident. Preliminary findings suggested personal issues though officers stressed that all angles are being examined.According to police, several hostel residents heard a loud thud in the morning, prompting them to rush outside. They found Jebin unconscious with severe injuries and immediately arranged to take him to hospital. A team from Bidhannagar South Police Station reached the spot soon after being alerted and began questioning fellow students and acquaintances. Investigators are also examining the student’s call records to gather further insight. A post-mortem examination will be conducted after the arrival of his parents, cops said. Police said further legal action will depend on any formal complaint lodged by the family. The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the NUJS campus, with students and faculty struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss.Vice-chancellor Nandimath O V described the death as a “terrible loss” for the institution. “He was a bright student with a promising future. As a parent and teacher, I am devastated. Just a week ago, I took a combined class — he was there,” he said. Jebin was an active member of the university’s cultural committee and was known for his interest in theatrics and mimicry. He recently performed a skit during the NUJS Night celebrations on Friday. Students said the incident appeared sudden and unexpected. “Everything happened in a spur of the moment. Till the morning, everything was normal,” a student said. Following the incident, a meeting was held between university authorities and student representatives. Officials said counselling support, already available on campus, would be strengthened, with efforts underway to ensure more regular access to mental health services.
