After Microsoft, ChatGPT-maker OpenAI makes a promise to Americans; says: We will not…

OpenAI has pledged that its massive Stargate data center operations won’t drive up electricity costs for ordinary Americans, joining Microsoft in addressing mounting public concerns about AI infrastructure’s impact on utility bills. The ChatGPT maker announced Tuesday that it will “pay our own way on energy” across all its Stargate campuses, promising tailored solutions for each community that could include funding dedicated power supplies, covering grid upgrades, or adding new generation capacity entirely at the company’s expense. The commitment comes exactly one year after Stargate’s January 2025 launch, with OpenAI already halfway toward its goal of 10 gigawatts of AI infrastructure by 2029. Sites are currently under development in Texas, New Mexico, Wisconsin, and Michigan, with the first Abilene, Texas facility already operational.

Tech Giants Rush to Calm Energy Bill Fears as Political Pressure Mounts

The announcement follows President Donald Trump’s Monday warning that tech companies must “pay their own way” and not make Americans “pick up the tab” for AI data centers. Microsoft made a similar “community-first AI” pledge just days earlier, signaling industry-wide acknowledgment of the backlash. The timing isn’t coincidental. Energy costs have become a flashpoint issue, with wholesale electricity prices surging up to 267% in some areas near data centers compared to five years ago, according to Bloomberg analysis. Baltimore residents, for instance, have seen monthly bills jump by over $17, despite being an hour away from Virginia’s Data Center Alley.

Water Use, Local Jobs Also Part of Community Partnership Plan

Beyond energy, OpenAI committed to minimizing water consumption through closed-loop cooling systems that use “a fraction of a community’s overall water use.” The company noted its Abilene site will consume in a year what the city uses in a single day.The company is also launching OpenAI Academies in Stargate communities, starting this spring in Abilene, to create workforce development pathways for local residents into AI-related jobs.OpenAI cited existing examples of its approach: In Wisconsin, partners Oracle and Vantage are underwriting 100% of power infrastructure investment through a dedicated electricity rate designed to protect other customers. In Michigan, a new battery storage system will be entirely project-financed.
