Delhi EV policy 2.0 explained: 100% road tax waiver till 2030, up to Rs 1 lakh benefit!

The Government of Delhi is preparing to roll out a new electric vehicle policy aimed at speeding up EV adoption in the national capital. The upcoming policy focuses on reducing upfront costs for buyers. Besides, it will also promote buyers to do away with their older, polluting vehicles.

Delhi EV Policy 2.0: Key details

A key highlight of the proposed policy is a scrappage-linked incentive scheme. Vehicle owners who scrap their Delhi-registered BS4 or older vehicles at authorised centres will be eligible for financial benefits. However, to claim the incentive, buyers must purchase a new electric vehicle within six months of receiving the scrappage certificate. The incentives will vary depending on the type of EV being purchased. Buyers opting for electric two-wheelers will receive Rs 10,000, while those choosing electric three-wheelers will get Rs 25,000. The biggest benefit is reserved for car buyers. Those purchasing an electric car priced up to Rs 15 lakh, ex-showroom, will be eligible for an incentive of Rs 1 lakh. This benefit, however, will be limited to the first one lakh applicants.

All incentives are expected to be transferred directly to beneficiaries through a direct benefit transfer (DBT) system. The process for claiming these benefits will be notified separately by the transport department. In addition to direct incentives, the government plans to continue offering major tax relief on EVs. Electric vehicles priced up to Rs 30 lakh, ex-showroom, are likely to enjoy 100 per cent exemption on road tax and registration fees until March 31, 2030. However, vehicles priced above Rs 30 lakh will not be eligible for these exemptions.
