What is Lunar Eclipse?

When Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, its shadow is cast across the lunar surface, causing a lunar eclipse. This alignment is only possible when the moon is full. The moon appears red at totality because of Rayleigh Scattering, which is the Earth’s atmosphere’s variable dispersion of all color ranges in inverse proportion to their wavelength. Because red is less diffused than other colors, it falls on the moon and gives it a crimson appearance.

Total Lunar Eclipse

The moon completely passes into the shadow of the Earth, producing what is known as a “Blood Moon,” in which sunlight refracts through the atmosphere of the Earth, giving the moon a reddish-orange appearance.

Partial Lunar Eclipse

It appears as though a bite has been made in our planet’s satellite since just a fraction of the Moon reaches the deepest area of the Earth’s shadow.

Penumbral Lunar Eclipse

The eclipse is so subtle that it is frequently quite difficult to notice with the naked eye as the Moon passes into Earth’s weak outer shadow.
