Break traffic rules, lose your license! Govt plans new point-based system

The government is working on a new system that could make it easier to penalise unsafe driving, with a proposal to introduce a point-based mechanism for driving licenses. Under the plan, motorists who repeatedly violate traffic rules may face suspension or even cancellation of their licenses.Speaking at the National Conclave on Road Safety organised by industry body CII in New Delhi, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said the proposed system aims to encourage responsible driving and reduce accidents. He noted that people’s lives are extremely important and the government is taking multiple steps to improve road safety across the country.According to the minister, India records nearly 5 lakh road accidents every year, resulting in about 1.8 lakh deaths, PTI reported. Many of these fatalities are linked to dangerous practices such as using mobile phones while driving, overspeeding, driving on the wrong side and drunken driving. He pointed out that despite higher penalties for traffic violations, enforcement remains a major challenge and there is often little fear or respect for traffic laws.

New driving system: How will it work

Under the proposed graded point system, drivers would start with a set number of points on their license. Points would be deducted for traffic offences, and once all points are exhausted, the license could be suspended for six months. Repeat violations could lead to cancellation of the license. The minister said the scheme is expected to be launched soon.Road safety remains a major concern, with a large share of accident victims belonging to the working-age population. As per official data, 72 per cent of road deaths occur among people aged between 18 and 45 years. The number of accident victims below 18 years stands at 10,119. Inputs from PTI.
