Push start-stop has slowly become a regular feature in today’s cars. You will find it in small hatchbacks as well as in the bigger segments such as SUVs. Instead of turning a key, all you have to do is press a button to start or stop the engine, as long as the key fob is inside the car. It feels modern. It feels premium. But like most features, it is not perfect. Here’s a quick look at some of the pros and cons of the push start-stop feature you should know about.

The biggest advantage is convenience. Plain and simple. You do not need to search for the key every time. Just sit inside, press the brake or clutch, and hit the button. That is it. In city traffic, this really helps.It also, in a way, adds a layer of security. Since the car starts only when the key fob is nearby, traditional hot-wiring becomes difficult. Most cars also get an engine immobiliser along with this system. Another small but useful benefit is reduced wear. Traditional keys rely on mechanical parts. Over time, those parts wear out. Push start systems use electronics instead. Fewer moving parts. Less physical stress. That helps in the long run.

But there are downsides too. One common issue is forgetting to switch the engine off. It happens more often than you think. There is no key to remove, so some drivers walk away assuming the car is off. In quiet cars, especially hybrids, this can go unnoticed.Cost is another concern. Losing a smart key fob is not cheap. Replacement usually means dealership visits and reprogramming. That costs money. Repairs related to the system can also be expensive once the warranty period is over.Then there is the dependency on electronics. If the car battery is weak or dead, the push start system may refuse to work. Most cars do have a backup method. But many owners do not know about it. That creates panic during emergencies.
