Ask any visitor about the specialty of Jim Corbett National Park, the responses will be largely about tigers, thick sal forests, or chilly mist-laden safaris at dawn. But what often slips beneath their notice is the silent force that is responsible for life thriving there, which is water. Long before it was India’s first national park and the pumping heart of a vital tiger reserve, it needs to be noted that rivers etched valleys in it, fed forests into bloom, and laid down paths where animals would gather when the heat turned unforgiving. To understand the real essence of Corbett, you must follow its rivers, especially the river that runs through its heart. The river that is in reality the lifeline of Jim Corbett National Park, is the Ramganga River. More than even a river, the Ramganga is the park’s heartbeat, sculpting its ecology, patterns of movement, and in some ways its very history. So central is this river to the region that Corbett was briefly known as Ramganga National Park between 1954 and 1955. The name changed, but the river’s role never did.

Ramganga River

Originating in the Gairsain region of the Lesser Himalayas, the Ramganga is primarily rain-fed. It travels nearly 100 km before entering Corbett near Marchula. Inside the park, it flows for about 40 km in an east–west direction, cutting through forests, grasslands, and riverine belts before emerging near Kalagarh and continuing towards the plains.Within Corbett, the Ramganga forms broad floodplains and shallow pools, perfect conditions for elephants, deer, otters, gharials, and hundreds of bird species. In summer, when smaller streams dry up and thirsty wildlife amasses along its banks, the river becomes a stage for some of the park’s most spectacular sights. Eventually, the Ramganga feeds into the Ganges near Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh.

Sonanadi River

The Sonanadi River originates in the northwest and flows into Corbett as a tributary of the Ramganga. The river is the namesake of the Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary, an important buffer area to Corbett Tiger Reserve. Sonanadi meets the Ramganga at its reservoir and is crucial to keeping animal life thriving in the more remote western edges of the park. Mandal River

The Mandal rarely appears in popular conversations on Corbett, but is no less important. Originating at the northern end of the park, Mandal flows along its western flank and snakes its way through forests. It shrinks to mere rivulets and pools during summer, but by monsoon, it swells dramatically. The Mandal is especially favored by anglers, who seek mahaseer, the so-called ‘water tiger’—and it adds another dimension to Corbett’s aquatic biodiversity.

Kosi River

A common misconception is that the Kosi River flows through the park. In reality, the river marks Corbett’s eastern boundary. The Kosi, originating from Mohan and passing through Dhikuli and Ramnagar, is a perennial river providing water to both wildlife and surrounding communities. Much wildlife gathers along its edges, particularly on the periphery of the park. The river is also popular for fishing and riverside walks, making it one of the most accessible natural features for visitors.
