Hannah Nelson was just 23 when her life suddenly came to an end after a brain bleed last weekend. The young United States para swimmer, who had already faced big challenges in life, passed away, leaving the swimming community in shock. She was not just an athlete but someone who inspired many with her strength and positive spirit. Her death was confirmed by Ave Maria University, where she had been part of the swim team.Hannah Nelson’s journey was never easy. When she was only 11, she was diagnosed with bone cancer. Because of that, she lost her left leg below the knee. But even after that, she stayed close to swimming, a sport she loved deeply. Over time, she worked hard, got stronger, and reached the international stage. In 2023, she represented Team USA at the World Para Swimming Championships, a moment that showed how far she had come.

Hannah Nelson did not let her early struggles stop her. After losing her leg, she continued to train and grow in the pool. Her talent and determination helped her earn a place on the U.S. Paralympics Swimming team. She competed at the 2023 World Para Swimming Championships and made her country proud.According to U.S. Paralympics Swimming, “The loss of Hannah Nelson is felt across our community. Hannah was a swimming program record holder at Ave Maria University. She proudly represented Team USA at the 2023 World Para Swimming Championships and was a valued member of the U.S. Paralympics Swimming team. Our thoughts are with her family and all who knew her.”Her time at Ave Maria University was also special. She spent two years there and became one of the standout swimmers in the program. She set records and became someone younger athletes looked up to.

Coach Giordan Harris remembers Hannah Nelson as joyful leader who inspired teammates beyond the pool

Hannah Nelson’s impact was not just about medals or records. Her coach, Giordan Harris, spoke about the kind of person she was every day. He said, “She was a program record holder here and a true leader, team and spiritual, for our team – in the pool, in the weight room, and in our team culture.”He also added, “She was also an accomplished para swimmer, and her story impacted a lot of people well beyond our campus. She was joyful, bright, and recently found her love for the water again. Our entire community is heartbroken.”Those who knew her say she brought energy and warmth wherever she went. Even after everything she had been through, she stayed positive and kept moving forward. That is what people will remember most about her.
