The April Pink Moon will be lighting up the skies in the emirate, creating a moment of celestial wonder and calmness.
What is the Pink Moon?
The Pink Moon was popularised by the Old Farmer’s Almanac. It derives its name from the Algonquin-speaking peoples of Native America and was named after the Phlox subulata, a vibrant pink wildflower commonly known as moss pink or creeping phlox. It blooms across eastern North America every early spring, coinciding with the arrival of the Pink Moon.
How does the Pink Moon occur?
Interestingly, the moon does not completely appear pink. It typically has a white, golden or silvery appearance. But when it sits low on the horizon, it can take a slightly orange or copper tone, thus appearing to have a pink tint. This happens due to a process called atmospheric scattering, where the Earth’s atmosphere filters out all the blue light and lets the warmer tones come through instead. Rather than a description of what the moon truly looks like, Pink Moon, like other moons throughout the year, works as a seasonal marker. For the times when people tracked changes in the natural world without the help of apps and calendars, the moons were one of the biggest signifiers of change. Along with marking the departure of winter and arrival of spring, the Pink Moon is also the bearer of Easter Sunday. This moon is considered to be the first full moon after the spring equinox and Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after it appears in the sky. In 2026, Easter will be celebrated on April 5, the first Sunday after the rising of the Pink Moon.
When will the Pink Moon be visible in UAE?
Pink Moon is also known across the globe by other names including Sprouting Grass Moon and Egg Moon. In the UAE, this moon will reach its peak illumination on April 2, 2026, at 6:11 am GST. However, experts suggest waiting for the evenings of April 1 and 2 for the best views of the phenomenon.
Where to get the best views of the Pink Moon in UAE?
While a low-pressure system is expected to bring some clouds in the skies on April 1, conditions are expected to clear out by April 2, thus offering unobstructed views of the Pink Moon. Here are some spots astronomy enthusiasts should consider for an unobstructed view of the Pink Moon:
Dubai
The Al Qudra desert is a regular venue for Dubai Astronomy Group events and for all the right reasons. The location has open skies and will provide a clear view of the Pink Moon for excited observers.
Abu Dhabi
Al Quaa Milky Way Spot is considered to be the darkest location in the UAE with virtually zero light pollution. Thus, it might be the best spot in the country for an event like this.
Ras Al Khaimah
UAE’s highest peak, Jebel Jais offers an elevation that puts you above any low-lying cloud cover entirely. Therefore, even if the weather is slightly unsettled viewers may be able to get a view of the Pink Moon.
Ajman
Emiratis in Ajman can head to the Al Zorah Nature Reserve which offers the perfect combination of coastal views and open skies. With it being conveniently away from bright city lights, the Pink Moon will be more easily visible than at most locations.
Umm Al Quwain
