NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu’s ruling party, the DMK, once again raised objections to the use of Hindi in non-Hindi regions. DMK leader and MP Kanimozhi flagged what she termed the “imposition” of Hindi after responding to a post that showed Hindi being prominently used on Chennai Park railway station signboard.Taking to social media platform X, Kanimozhi appeared to target the BJP-led Centre, which the DMK has often accused of promoting Hindi at the expense of regional languages.In her post, written in Tamil, she said, loosely translated: “It began in Kallakurichi and continues to Chennai Poonthottam. They will not stop imposing it. Nor will we cease resisting it.”The BJP-led central government and the DMK government in Tamil Nadu have long been at odds over the language issue, with chief minister MK Stalin and his party repeatedly opposing what they describe as the imposition of Hindi from the North and with the support of Centre.Language politics is expected to play a key role in shaping electoral prospects in Tamil Nadu, which is heading for assembly elections to its 234-seat legislature. Neighbouring Puducherry, a Union Territory where Tamil is an official language, is also preparing for assembly polls.
